Expressions of Interest sought: M~M2018 Canoe Artist

M~M2018, Geelong’s Extreme Arts Walk, Seeks Lead Artist for a Major Ephemeral Sculpture Commission

Canoe Artists: Leonard Tebegetu & Mahony Keily
Photographer: Dean Walters

COMMISSION $20,000

Geelong’s Extreme Arts Walk M~M2018 is now calling for artists based in Australia or overseas to submit an Expression of Interest for a major $20,000 Australian Ephemeral Sculpture Commission Canoe.

The Canoe Commission has been made possible by funding from founding partner Deakin University. As one of the unique ephemeral sculpture commissions now offered in Australia, Canoe will be the lead processional artwork of M~M2018 – Geelong’s multi-award winning extreme arts walk, an 80 kilometre biennial journey of discovery over two days (4 to 5 May 2018).

M~M2018 begins at the You Yangs mountain range, crossing Geelong’s industrial heartland at nightfall and arriving in the city centre to collide with Geelong After Dark, a night of extreme
and unexpected arts. At dawn the next day, the extreme arts walk continues through the city centre to join the Barwon River, through rolling Bellarine farmland, along ocean beach to reach river mouth at Barwon Heads by sunset. M~M2018 is about land and people, and it’s about art bringing these two together.

The theme for M~M2018 is ‘EARTH’.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST DUE BY 15 FEBRUARY 2018.

CANOE WILL BECOME THE ICONIC IMAGE FOR M~M2018.

Canoe Artist: Benjamin Gilbert
Fire Sculptor: Mahony Keily
Photographer: Gerry van der Meer

The Commission is for the design, construction, rehearsal and overseeing the procession of Canoe along the 80 kilometre walk, including Canoe’s involvement in three ceremonies. Canoe is set on re during the nal ceremony, therefore the materials used to create the sculpture need to burn without toxic effect on the environment.

Expressions of Interests must include:

  • statement of interest specific to the Canoe commission
  • preferred medium
  • curriculum vitae
  • up to 10 images of previous artworks
  • 2-3 reviews and/or examples of media coverage
  • budget outline.

Collaborations will also be considered for this commission. The commission includes mentorship of an emerging Geelong regional artist(s) and may include 2 or 3 professional development workshops with a small group of professional artists. The Canoe artist will also lead a workshop with a selected group of Deakin Creative Art students, with one student selected to continue to work with the artist/s in the creation of Canoe.

Expressions of Interest to be received by 15 February 2018 via email: artsculture@geelongcity.vic.gov.au or on USB or hard copy sent to: M~M Project Manager, Arts and Culture Department, City of Greater Geelong, PO BOX 104, Geelong, Victoria, Australia 3220.
