Walking Circles & Ceremonies
Nine Walking Circles and three ceremonies mark resting points for walkers and the lead processional artwork ‘Canoe’ as it travels the 80km Mountain to Mouth contemporary songline.
Each walking circle features an ephemeral artwork commissioned from a Geelong regional artist. For M~M2018, the artworks respond to the place they are installed and to the overarching theme for M~M2018 – Earth.

Gathering of the City welcomes Canoe and the walkers to the city centre to collide with Geelong After Dark. Choirs and dancers from all parts of the municipality converge as Canoe and it’s entourage of walkers enter Johnstone Park at the end of day one. Walkers are invited to walk a ‘lap of honour’ around the ceremony circle as part of this gathering. Be ready to sing your heart out as the massed choir and dancers create an infectious celebratory atmosphere, a nourishing for tired feet.

The final ceremony, Gathering of the Elements, marks the completion of the 80km pilgrimage and is a meditation upon that which heals us. In a ceremony of song, dance and fire, Canoe is laden with votive offerings, Clooties, and then ceremonially set alight and sent out to sea from the mouth of the Barwon River.
