Mountain to Mouth, the multi-award winning arts walk will pass through Leopold, Drysdale, Queenscliff, Pt Lonsdale V, Ocean Grove and Barwon Heads from 8.000am to 6.00pm Saturday 5 May 2018.
Mountain to Mouth begins the 80km journey Friday midday 4 May from the You Yangs, crossing the industrial heartland of Geelong in darkness before arriving in the City Centre to collide with Geelong After Dark, a night of edgy and unexpected arts.
At dawn on Saturday 5 May, the journey will follow the Barwon River through rolling Bellarine farmland, along the coast to reach the Barwon Heads river mouth at sunset for a beautiful closing ceremony.
Bellarine community-based groups, including the Barwon Heads Arts Council, Light House Arts Collective, Ocean Grove Harriers, Friends of the Hooded Plover, students, teachers, artists, dancers, choirs, cubs and scout groups have embraced the event to add their own local voice.
Canoe, the lead ephemeral art work of Mountain to Mouth is a creation of respected Ocean Grove artist Kerrie Bedson, in collaboration with award-winning multimedia artist Leslie Pearson (USA).
Both artists are inspired by nature to explore themes of memory and identity in the context of the 2018 theme, Earth.
The materials used by Bedson and Pearson will guide the form and function of Canoe and will be utilised to create a sculpture of beauty and strength.
Kaz McGlynn (Barwon Heads) and Beth Arnold (Pt Lonsdale) have added their distinctive voices in response to the theme.
Our Star of the Sea Ocean Grove students, lead by teacher Helen Stevenson, are creating lanterns that will be a part of the magical lantern parade in Gathering of the Elements, the final ceremony, at Barwon Heads. Jebediah singer/musician Kevin Mitchell (aka Bob Evans) will accompany the Ocean Grove choirs and the dance component of the three main ceremonies has been co-ordinated by Ocean Grove local Tara Lynch.
The passion with which Bellarine Communities have embraced Mountain to Mouth is a testament to the power and beauty of community-led art.
