Barwon River Rowing Precinct to Christies Road Leopold

Distance: 10.6km
Times: 6:50am - 9:00am (2hr 10min)

This path is mostly sealed and mostly flat with lots of road crossings and it does start to climb as it gets close to Christie’s Road.

Passing by Landy Field, it’s a long but very pretty hike along this path. Watch the river wake up with the sun and then head out from the very start of the Bellarine Rail Trail.  After leaving the residential areas of East Geelong and Leopold, the trail passes by the back of some beautiful little farmlets. If you like the sunrise, rivers, trees and saying good morning to the birds, cows, and sheep, then this is the walk for you.

This part of the trail is being revegetated by the Friends of the Bellarine Rail Trail.  You will notice grasslands in Moolap, the Sheoaks through Leopold and the Gum trees and understory plants near the Curlewis golf course.

At Curlewis, the rail trail intersects with the Portarlington Road, where the Friends Group have created “Friends Park” which incorporates an Avenue of Honour for the Ocean Grove RSL amongst newly planted manna, swamp, red-gum trees and native grasses and  bird nesting boxes for the encouragement of native bird life. Don’t forget to turn around before you approach Christies Road and have a look at the You Yangs in the far off distance and feel proud as to how far you have come.
